Seaham Coast Route

This walk starts and ends in the car park near Nose’s Point in Seaham, it follows part of the railway line and loops around Hawthorn Burn. If you’ve got a dog, note that sections of this walk go through farmland and there is sometimes livestock in the fields. If this is the case please out your dog on a lead. The Seaham coast is also a nature reserve and as such please be mindful of nesting birds in the spring and summer.

Housesteads to Steel Rigg

This is a circular walk (part linear), approximately 6.5 miles in length, starting at Housesteads Fort in Northumberland. We’ve included it in North East Walks until we have more for Northumberland. If you want to walk around the fort as part of this walk please be aware that there is an entry fee to pay, unless you are a member of English Heritage. This route follows Hadrian’s Wall to Sycamore Gap and up and along to Steel Rigg. The view from Steel Rigg is spectacular, we were lucky enough to catch it with a full rainbow, look in our gallery to see it.

Hart to Monk Hesleden Circular

This walk starts and ends at St Mary Magdalene Church car park in Hart Village, Hartlepool. It’s a great walk for nature and history lovers as part of the walk goes through Nesbitt Dene and through an old church graveyard. In the winter the gravestones can be seen and read, with some dating back to the 1800’s. Please ensure any dogs are kept on leads past the two farms and on the roads.

Summerhill to Elwick Circular

This walk starts and ends in the car park at Summerhill country park in Hartlepool. A 7 mile route across mostly farmland which is use for arable farming rather than livestock. This is a great walk for dogs as they can be off lead for most of the walk with lots of open space for them to run around in. There is a pub and cafe in Elwick which is great to stop for some refreshments half way round. This walk can be enjoyed all year round but can get quite muddy in winter.

Greatham to Cowpen Bewley Circular

A short walk starting and ending in Greatham village, Hartlepool. At 3.75 mile in length across farmland its a nice short walk when you only have a short amount of time. This is a great walk for dogs as they can be off lead most of the route, however be aware that some of the fields regularly contain livestock. There is a pub in Greatham to finish off your walk with a nice drink and some food. The route is also fairly good in the colder months as it doesn’t get too muddy.

Low Coniscliffe to High Coniscliffe Circular

A wonderful walk starts at the Baydale Beck Inn in Low Coniscliffe on the A67. This is an easy going 7 mile walk through agricultural fields and along the River Tees. Its is a great walk for dogs as they can be off lead for most of the walk. In late spring the fields are full of crops such as oil seed rape so paths can be hard to see. There are lots of wonderful wildflowers and wildlife to enjoy as well. Be aware that there is giant hogweed along the river which should be avoided.

Castle Eden to Castle Eden Dene Circular

One of our favourite North East walks. This 4.5 mile walk starts and ends as the Castle Eden Inn in the little village of Castle Eden. This is an easy going, fairly flat walk that can be enjoyed with children and dogs. Dogs can be off lead most of the walk, with the exception of Hesleden village and crossing the B1281. We enjoyed this walk on a Sunday morning and had a drink in the pub at the end.
